Winner of the Third Prize at the prestigious “Premio Trio di Trieste” International Chamber Music Competition 2024, Susato Trio derives its name from Tielman Susato, the 16th-century Flemish composer from Antwerp who founded the first music publishing house in the Low Countries. In the spirit of their namesake, the Trio aims to share music with as wide an audience as possible. Their mission is to perform not only the established piano trio repertoire but also hidden gems that have, for various reasons, remained overlooked in music history. Founded in May 2022 by violinist Sarah Bayens (Belgium), cellist Mikko Pablo (Philippines–USA), and pianist Markiyan Popil (Ukraine), the Trio quickly gained international attention. In December 2022, they won First Prize at the Generation Classique Competition organized by Les Festivals de Wallonie and in January 2024 they were awarded First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Supernova Chamber Music Competition organized by the Klarafestival. The Trio is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Chamber Music through the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA) program — a two-year project involving the conservatories of The Hague, Vienna, Paris, Oslo, Vilnius, Manchester, and Fiesole.
